The father of a boy slain in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., choked up as he took the podium set up at the waterfront park under crystal blue skies Saturday afternoon.

“It will be Jack’s seventh birthday on Monday,” Dean Pinto told the assembled crowd. “And what a beautiful present to give him. A beautiful playground that children will enjoy for years.”

The crowd applauded him, all there to celebrate the life of a child who most knew only through news reports. Hundreds of children stood near their parents, waiting for their chance to run around on the playground built in honor of the slain son, 6-year-old Jack Pinto.
