On a day where much of the New Jersey coast was shrouded in a cold rain, there was a rare bright spot in Union Beach. Mayor Paul Smith, speaking to a crowd of more than 200, said it was a sign.

“Usually when we’re standing down here, the wind is blowing off the water,” he said on April 5 during the official groundbreaking for a new public playground on Front Street, a park dedicated to 6-year-old Newtown, Conn., school shooting victim Jack Pinto.

“Today is a gorgeous day. The rain didn’t come and, if you were paying attention, when this ceremony started the sun came out. That’s Jack smiling on us.”…
