BREEZY POINT, Queens (PIX11) — A community devastated by hurricane Sandy is honoring one of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.

On Sunday afternoon, a playground in Breezy Point was dedicated to the memory of Mary Sherlach.

Sherlach was a guidance counselor at Sandy Hook Elementary School and one of the 26 people killed during the Dec. 14 shooting.

The playground is part of The Sandy Ground Project.

Started by the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association, the project will build 26 playgrounds in 26 Sandy-ravaged communities in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
